The Haight
The Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco is known as the epicenter of the hippie movement culminating in the "Summer of Love" in 1967.
Experiencing the Haight first hand brought me back memories of Manila. Although I was living in the Philippines and barely over nine years old, I remember the same counter-culture influence in the islands. Make Love Not War, peace symbols, and the marijuana leaf design was dominant in the late sixties and early seventies.
Today, the Haight is also a destination for teenagers and the "young-minded" who shop for clothes and shoes that are not part of the mainstream. I enjoyed browsing through the stores and see that the culture left in the '60s has not totally been forgotten; though it has partially been compromised through commercialization and tourism.
Peace.
